Many years ago, we published a blog on Our Favorite Ways to Display Quilts. It remains one of our most popular blogs—our quilters love using it as a source of inspiration for their own quilt displays. We spend so much time on our quilts, it’s always a shame to hear from quilters that most of their work stays tucked away in dresser drawers and closets.
Since publishing that blog, we realized we never dug into how everyone at Thimbles displays their quilts. Working in a quilt shop, between all of us, we have A LOT of quilts. And we put them on display all around our homes. This is also a great opportunity to ogle all of our quilts.
So, it’s time to let our readers in on our secrets and share another inspiring entry in our favorite ways to display quilts: Thimbles edition! If you look over these suggestions and don’t see your favorite way of displaying quilts, won’t you join us in the Thimbleful of Sewists and Crafters group and share your amazing quilt display? We’re always looking for new, creative ways to show off our quilts!
Tammy’s Quilt Displays
I obviously have a lot of quilts in my house, so get ready to see all of the ones currently on display! I have quilts…
Atop an antique dresser…

Folded, and Used as a Bedrunner…

I love this quilt as a bedrunner because that scalloped edge makes such a pretty detail when it’s folded over like that.
On Railings…

On the Wall, in my Sewing Room…

Every railing gets a few quilts in my house!
Wrapped Around Sofa Pillows on the Couch…

Come on, it’s genius!
Over an old church pew…

I love the geometry of this whole set up.
In the fireplace…

That’s right, your eyes don’t deceive you—I put quilts in the fireplace. It’s clean, and I don’t use it, so it might as well showcase my quilts! There’s another quilts-in-the-fireplace display in this list that has me rethinking my whole fireplace quilt display because it’s so clever! Keep reading to see it…
Jane’s Quilt Display
On a special hanger…

Jane’s quilt, Elizabeth, hangs on a special hanger designed for hanging quilts. Everything feels so pulled together here. Sneak peek at a quilt-in-action, hiding in the corner of the sofa…
Pat’s Quilt Displays
Pat might be one of our most prolific quilters, so buckle up: she has a lot of incredible quilts on display in her home.
High on a wall, between windows…

I spy some quilts on a railing as well…
Behind a couch…

Beneath a shelf…

In a glass cabinet…

Such a great idea visually, and for keeping quilts dust free.
Layered, on the bed…

Folded on a chair, and hung on the wall…

Folded over the couch…

On a rack…

On the wall…

I love that she hung this on a curtain rod with clips!
Kara’s Quilt Display
Folded over the back of a chair…

This is Kara’s book nook, so it’s appropriate that the Book Nook Quilt found its way there.
Char’s Quilt Displays
When we asked for Char’s quilt displays, she immediately said, “Good gravy! I don’t decorate, I use mine!!” We would argue that even in use, quilts are decorative, so her entries count!
On the bed…

On a chair and loveseat…

Note the quilt-in-progress with the binding clips on the black chair. That’s where Char must sit when she’s binding! Does anyone remember the quilt book by Atkinson Designs called My Red Sofa? That's what Char’s loveseat picture reminds me of.
Kay and Maren moved away, but they are still honorary members of the Thimbles team and eagerly shared their quilt displays with us!
Maren’s Quilt Displays
On the bed…

A classic for a reason!
On the wall, behind her sewing machine…

The perfect spot to inspire future quilts.
Draped over the couch…

On her boys’ beds…

Kay’s Quilt Displays
On a quilt ladder…

Another classic that never goes out of style!
On the bed…

Around her puppy, Piper…

Does Kay automatically win the day because she included a puppy? You decide…
Finally, I’m sharing some beautiful quilt displays I saw while visiting Thimbles’ customer, Carol Miller.
Carol Miller’s Quilt Displays
In the Fireplace...

I was at Carol’s house delivering a new Bernina Q16 Plus when I noticed this quilt hanging over the opening of her fireplace. She, like me, uses her fireplace not for fires, but for quilts. Not only does her version tie the whole room together, but this clever quilt display also prevents drafts from the chimney! See below how she hung the quilt with a rod and hooks. Simple and stunning! Now I’m rethinking my own fireplace quilt setup…

On a Ladder - But with a Twist

The quilts-hanging-on-a-ladder idea is a familiar one—we see it in a lot of quilters’ homes, and rightfully so. It’s a great, timeless way to display quilts. However, Carol’s quilt ladder is a little bit different. Her husband made her a special quilt ladder display that she can hang on the wall behind her sofa. It takes up much less floor space than a standard quilt ladder. Thank goodness for handy husbands!
